MURPHY FORD ROAD VACATED ROAD CLOSURE

VACATED PORTION OF MURPHY FORD ROAD TO CLOSE MAY 13th
A portion of Murphy Ford Road will permanently close on May 13th. The section of road impacted is approximately 2900 feet long and includes the 1200 block to 3800 block. A portion of this section of roadway was closed in 2020 due to safety concerns south of the North Moreau Creek. At that time, the county began working on plans to vacate the roadway permanently.
Vacation of a roadway is a formal process of relinquishing road right-of-way or easement to the adjoining landowners. It requires a petition submitted by at least twelve residents of the affected township followed by a formal hearing held by the county commission. If approved, the roadway no longer is maintained by the county and ownership reverts back to the adjoining landowners.
A petition was submitted by residents in the area and accepted by the Cole County Commission in 2021. A hearing was held on January 25, 2022 and a court order vacating the roadway was unanimously approved by the Cole County Commission.
The Cole County Public Works department has completed the necessary work to relinquish the road right-of-way and will install the appropriate signing on Friday May 13th closing the road permanently. The impacted area includes the low water crossing over the North Moreau Creek which will now be on private property.
Any questions can be directed to the Cole County Public Works Department at 573-636-3614.
